About Fine Arts

Fine Arts

promotes growth; physically, emotionally, socially and cognitively. Art encourages critical thinking, problem solving, communication and self-discovery. From pencils to pastels, construction paper to clay, students use a variety of media as they imagine, plan, create and design as young artists. In addition to learning skills and techniques, students also learn how to assess artwork (their own and the works of others) and how to articulate themselves using appropriate vocabulary.

Steamboat Springs Middle School's

Fine Arts program has developed into a comprehensive curriculum that has been aligned with State Standards and encourages all students to work as artists. Students work in small groups, whole groups and independently. We explore art history and in each grade students learn about a variety of artists. Sometimes even local artists join Fine Arts to share their craft through creative presentations! Our curriculum has been designed to be both age appropriate and enticing for our middle school students.

Differentiated instruction

is always present – recognizing each student as an individual. This method allows all populations to be served by customizing the curriculum around a student’s needs.  It is the mission statement of Fine Arts to provide a safe, nurturing environment that uses the art room as an art studio; providing professional materials and tools as well as providing guidance, while encouraging each art student to be his/her personal best.

It is my hope that you’ll feel my enthusiasm and love for sharing the arts through your children. Please encourage them to share their artistic creations with you throughout the year. Your support is greatly appreciated and I look forward to sharing in your child’s school year!     Artistically Yours,                                                 Mrs. Susanmarie G. Oddo
Studies have shown when done properly, comprehensive art education aides in increasing standardized tests score and overall academic achievement. In today’s competitive job market, companies are seeking job candidates who possess both creative thinking and problem solving skills; both are fostered through our Fine Arts program.
